Visualography

I'm terrible at keeping up with this blog let alone starting a new one, but that is exactly what I have done. I have started a blog on tumblr called Visualography, it's about what propelled me to start a blog in the first place- a simple photographic diary and everything photography related. I will continue to occasionally post contents on this blog like I do now. In the mean time, follow me here: http://visualography.tumblr.com/

Trend Report.

I knew something was fishy when I spotted an article of clothing (that was a particular style) nearly 6 or 7 months ago at the department store that I was all too familiar with.  This style or fashion trend happens to be the layering of a skirt over pants or a dress over trousers (in my case it was usually all of the above or I would mix it up by doing a slip over trousers.  I wore many different lengths and versions of this style).  As an Asian, I can safely say that this was quite popular in Asia, since we are all about getting our layering on.  Some of my favorite Asian pop stars sported this look- Sammi Cheng with the more lightweight dress over extra long trousers and Namie Amuro did the short skirt over pants.  I bet if you're Asian and into fashion, you probably sported this look too.  If you actually think about it, there are countries and cultures that use a similar layering technique...  India and the Middle East.  However, I'm not blogging about how, when or where this fashion trend began, I'm blogging about me and this particular style.

I'm not sure if fashion dictionaries ever came out with a word for this style but if I remember correctly the hybrid of a skirt and shorts was called a "skort" so, in this case if we use the same wordplay then we come up with "skant, drant, and slant".  Whatever you call it, this style was my JAM.  I wore this look like I invented it.  All throughout high school and well afterwards I was still doing the skirt over pants action (I mainly wore separates to create this look).  I use to wear this style religiously in varying ways back in high school.  I didn't think fashion trends recycled so quickly, but when I spotted that already fused together skirt pants I couldn't believe my eyes and actually had to do a double take to make sure what I was seeing was real, when I realized it was, I immediately made a mental note of it.  There are some fashion trends that are very predictable and you can practically smell it in the air and so when it makes an appearance or resurfaces, it's not surprising at all, but not this one- at least for me.  As I was flipping through the May issue of British Vogue a few days ago what do I see in the 'In Vogue' section?  Yup, that's right.  I thought I had to live a lot longer to see a trend like this come back around so I was a little surprised to see it making it's way back now (even though I've witnessed and participated in the rise of flannel in the 90's the rise of flannel in recent years).  Seeing this style become a trend again has just slapped me upside the head by reminding me that I'm getting older (now, I can relate to my mom when she tells me that she remembers wearing some of the fashion and beauty trends she sees now).  I remember it like it was yesterday, this one particular fashion magazine had a little section on the last page that questioned this skirt over pants fashion look as a Do or Don't.  It was always one of those styles that had people scratching their heads like "Huh?  Why would you wear a skirt over your pants?"  But, honestly, I've always LOVED it.  It's the layering factor that I like, but just like everything else if you over do it or just do it badly, of course it will look tacky (one thing I have to note is that during my heyday with the skirt over pants style I was living in a small town and so I wasn't aware of how the fashion mecca- New York, was handling this trend or if it ever even picked up, since I took my inspiration from my asian pop stars and the love of layering).  I actually still sport this style but in a more sleek and modern version of the skirt over pants or dress over trousers look.  Just when I was about to move on from my teenage versions of it, I see it all coming back to me now.  I guess, I should just tell my mom to go ahead and send up those pieces from back home that I use to wear and hope that I still fit into them- maybe even better than I use to!

Kate Winslet on the cover of British Vogue

Today, we received the April issue of British Vogue.  I was shocked to see Kate Winslet on the cover flaunting her newly bleached blonde hair-do.  She looks AMAZING.  In a way, the blonde gives her a more youthful and elegant look (though she's always been an elegant woman).  I also love the contrasting brow.  Well done Kate!
